School Climate Action Plans

icongreen_greenhearthands

In 2022, the sustainability and climate change strategy for education and children's services mandated a sustainability lead and climate action plan to be put in place in all educational facilities by 2025. The Department for Education recommended 4 Pillars for schools to work towards to within their climate action plan these were:

  1. Decarbonisation and Net Zero: actions to measure and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, working towards net zero.

  2. Biodiversity and Nature: efforts to protect and enhance nature and wildlife within the setting and its surrounding.

  3. Adaptation and Resilience: how the setting is preparing for and responding to the impacts of climate change.

  4. Climate education and green skills: how learners are supported to understand climate change, sustainability, and develop relevant skills.

By working towards these 4 Pillars schools work towards sustainable development goals and educate pupils about the impacts of climate change and biodiversity loss. This will allow future generations to hold accountability for their actions and make positive change where possible.

Attached below are resources aimed to help schools develop their climate action plans and demonstrate further actions that could be taken:
