How do Parks and Open Spaces link to Climate Change?

Parks and open spaces act as a carbon store, the plants and trees take in carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store it in their tissues. Plants also store carbon below ground in the soil and can be remain for long periods of time when undisturbed. Green spaces often act as a connection between places therefore makes walking and cycling much easier reducing the need for cars and in turn reducing emissions.

Not only do parks and open spaces store carbon they can also help in mitigating the impacts of Climate Change by slowing the flow of water through urban areas and reducing the risk of flooding from extreme weather events. Trees and vegetation can mitigate the impact of extreme heat events by providing shade and cooling the air.

The co benefits of parks and open spaces such as improving sense of community by giving people a place to meet and socialise, this encourages them to work together to mitigate and respond to climate change.
